Designing a calmer entryway in a Mumbai apartment
By the MIB Care Team · Mumbai · October 2026

The entryway is the smallest space in most Mumbai apartments, and one of the busiest. Shoes, keys, bags, deliveries, umbrellas and guests all pass through a few square feet. It is also the first impression of your home, for visitors and for you every evening.
1. Give shoes a closed home
A closed shoe cabinet with ventilation slats keeps footwear out of sight and lets it breathe, which matters in the monsoon. Limit the entrance to the shoes worn this week. Occasion and seasonal footwear can live elsewhere.
2. One landing spot for keys and essentials
A slim console or wall shelf with a small brass or ceramic bowl gives keys, wallets and access cards one place to land. It ends the daily search before leaving.
3. A place to sit
A narrow bench makes putting on shoes easier, especially for elders, and can hide storage underneath for umbrellas or bags.
4. Plan for deliveries and the monsoon
- Keep a basket or shelf for parcels, so deliveries do not end up on the floor or the dining table.
- Use a tray or stand for wet umbrellas and raincoats during the monsoon.
- Choose a doormat that dries quickly and is easy to clean.
5. Keep it light and calm
A round mirror makes a small entrance feel larger and brighter. One plant, one piece of art and warm lighting are enough. Resist the urge to fill every surface.
6. A two-minute evening reset
Return shoes to the cabinet, keys to the bowl and parcels to their shelf before the evening ends. With a clear system, this takes two minutes, and every morning starts calmer.
The entryway is often where our home resets begin, because it changes how the whole home feels the moment you walk in.
