Preparing your home for festive season without the rush
By the MIB Care Team · Mumbai · October 2026

For most Indian families, the festive season is the busiest time of year at home. Diwali cleaning, décor, gifts, guests, cooking and celebrations all arrive together. Done in a last-minute rush, it is exhausting. Done in steps, it can feel genuinely joyful.
Four weeks before: clear and decide
- Walk through the home and note the spaces guests will see: entrance, living room, dining area, guest washroom and guest room.
- Clear one storage space, such as a loft or top shelf, to receive festive items when they come out and go back.
- Sort last year's décor. Discard broken lights and faded items before you buy anything new.
Three weeks before: deep clean
- Book deep cleaning early. Professional teams are busiest in the final two weeks.
- Focus on what daily cleaning misses: ceiling fans, light fittings, window channels and tracks, kitchen cabinets inside and out, the chimney and sofa upholstery.
- Clean and organise the kitchen before festive cooking begins, not during it.
Two weeks before: organise for guests
- Prepare the guest room and guest washroom with fresh linen and a clear shelf for visitors' belongings.
- Create a gifting station: one table or shelf with wrapping, cards and a simple list of who receives what.
- Give the entrance a home for extra footwear, so the doorway does not overflow when guests arrive.
The final week: style and enjoy
With the cleaning and organising done, the last week is for the enjoyable part: lights, rangoli, flowers and diyas. Keep décor intentional. A few well-placed brass diyas and marigolds look more elegant than every surface covered.
After the festival: reset in one day
The post-festival reset is where most homes struggle. Plan it now:
- Pack décor into labelled boxes by type: diyas, lights, garlands, puja items. Note anything to replace next year.
- Sort gifts received: use, re-gift or donate within the week.
- Return the guest room and kitchen to their everyday systems.
If you would rather hand this over, our Seasonal, Festive and Travel Resets cover both the preparation and the reset afterwards.
